The book originated out of the field work that the authors
have been doing over the years while working with customers
on various J2EE (tm) projects. We tried to capture knowledge
for enabling design reuse and naturally found documenting
the problem/solution pairs in the form of patterns to be an
ideal technique to achieve our goal. If you are new to software
patterns, check out the resources section, which lists books
and websites to learn from.
The first public discussion of the material was presented
at JavaOne 2000 in a highly oversubscribed session (TS-1341)
titled: Prototyping
patterns for the J2EE (tm) Platform. Shortly after the
presentation, the audience responded overwhelmingly and there
was a need for us to publish our material for general consumption.
There was a huge increase in the subscription to the public
discussion alias (j2eepatterns-interest
- archives.java.sun.com).
Prentice Hall / Sun Microsystems Press agreed to be our publisher.
We then worked to prepare our final material and went through
various revisions and edits.
The first issue of the book was released during JavaOne 2001
as a special edition in May 2001. The book went on to become
a best seller at the JavaOne Conference Bookstore.
The first edition was shipped towards the end of June 2001
and was available in stores. It has since gone on to become
a best seller in computers & software category.
